As an early example of digital art collectibles, Curio Cards used the Ethereum distributed network to show a new model for creation and ownership of digital art. This model allowed artists to publish unique pieces of rare, collectible digital art, receive direct payment for their work, and interact with collectors in entirely new ways. The full set of Curio Cards features digital art numbered from 1 to 30, with artwork by seven different artists. Each numbered card has unique artwork and a fixed supply of digital prints, ranging in supply from 111 to 2154 Cards. There are a total of 29,700 Cards, with an estimated 4,000 currently lost or destroyed. All Curio Cards were created in 2017, and no more can ever be created. Curio has had an influential impact on modern NFTs. The two most popular NFT standards later developed ([ERC721 ](https://eips.ethereum.org/EIPS/eip-721)and [ERC1155](https://eips.ethereum.org/EIPS/eip-1155)) reference and share many design elements with Curio Cards. # FAQs Frequently Asked Questions about Curio Cards ### When did Curio Cards launch? Curio Cards debuted on May 9, 2017. For context, that’s six weeks before CryptoPunks and a year and a half before Uniswap. The first week saw the release of three cards ([Apples](/the-cards/1-apples), [Nuts](/the-cards/2-nuts), [Berries](/the-cards/3-berries)) by the artist [Phneep](/the-artists/phneep). The next three cards followed every week (with the exception of Cards 10, 20, and 30 which released solo on their respective weeks). ### I own Crypto/NFTs. Curio Cards is the first original digital artwork NFT collection released on [Ethereum](https://ethereum.org/en/), the most popular protocol for NFTs. A set of unique and rare digital collectibles, Curio Cards was released years before NFTs were popular, with no large fundraising or hype marketing. Instead, 100% of the sales revenue went to the [artists](/the-artists). The few NFT collections that pre-date Curio Cards either covered a different category, such as digital land (example: Etheria World), or were located/started on a different network (example: RarePepe on Counterparty). Today Curio Cards holds a prominent position in the Historical NFTs/Digital Collectibles category in the art world, including the distinction of the [first Eth denominated auction at world famous Christie's New York auction house](https://www.christies.com/auctions/post-war-to-present). Curio Cards is the first NFT project (on any network) to showcase artwork covering different mediums, themes, and styles. This was the direct result of its day-one goal to help any kind of artist explore blockchain artwork. In total, seven different [artists](/the-artists) were featured over 30 different series of cards. Curio Cards artwork covers visual storytelling (Cards 1–10, 21–23), social commentary and parody (Cards 11–16), charitable fundraising (Cards 14–16), the first dogs on Ethereum (Cards 17–19), Patreon-style support and membership (Card 20), a collection of pfp-style character avatars (Cards 21–23), physical art turned digital (Cards 24–29), hand-drawn patterns (Cards 24–26), collectively generative artwork (Cards 27–29), and animated gifs (Cards 23 and 30). The Curio Cards smart contract is the first to use IPFS, a distributed file protocol, to secure the artwork. All of the metadata is immutable, with no admin keys or dependence on a single node. Owning a Curio Card is an irrevocable and distributed ownership of digital artwork. Curio Cards is an artist-first project, conceived to support [artists](/the-artists) and demonstrate and promote digital art as a medium. 100% of the sales of the original Cards and 100% of the royalties go to the artist (or the charity of their choice). Released when NFTs were unknown, Curio Cards' mission was to educate people on crypto and digital artwork. ### What was the original price of the Cards? The price ranged from $0.50 to $1 per Card. ### How many cards exist? I see 30 Cards with thousands of holders. Curio Cards behave like digital prints, with the 'cards' concept used to explain their collectible nature. They work like baseball or Pokémon cards. Curio Cards was created with two main goals: to promote digital art, and to promote digital artists. Both goals meant getting the artwork into as many hands as possible, something that prints do better than single-piece sales. Each Card represents a whole series of that Card, a print run of multiple copies. Each of the 1-30 Card series is unique, with different artwork and supply, and each individual Card in the series is a non-divisible rare collectible. Since Curio Cards are always mint condition and share a common series (their Card number), each print can share the same market and trade under the same price, optimizing market liquidity and price discovery. The amount of each Card's print run supply varied from week to week. For cards 1–10, the supply was decided by the collectors. A large number of Cards were made available, but all the unsold Cards were destroyed at the end of each week. For cards 11–30, the supply was decided by the artist being featured. This amount changed from week to week as artists learned from observing the effect supply had on previous artist releases. [Card 30](/the-cards/30-eclipse)'s supply of 821 Cards is because of the day of the solar eclipse, 8/21, in 2017. ### Why does OpenSea show new Curio Cards being minted? All Curio Cards were minted in 2017; there is no way to make more of the original cards. What [OpenSea](https://opensea.io/collection/curiocardswrapper) is showing is old Cards getting wrapped. See "[What is wrapping?](#q-what-is-wrapping)" for more info. ### Why is the Card supply different on the website vs. OpenSea? The [website](https://curio.cards/) shows the total supply of Cards created and released, while [OpenSea](https://opensea.io/collection/curiocardswrapper) can only see the supply of Cards that are wrapped. Cards that have never been wrapped could potentially be lost, or held in old wallets that are no longer accessible. We call these [zombie wallets](/info/market-data#ezras-big-sheet-of-information). You can think of the amount listed on the [website](https://curio.cards/) as the "maximum potential supply," and the supply on [OpenSea](https://opensea.io/collection/curiocardswrapper) as the "active supply" for a Card series. Since it's still possible for old zombie wallets to wake up, the real supply is potentially somewhere between the two. The supply can never be increased beyond the number of Cards created in 2017. ### How does buying/trading Curio Cards work? The only way to get a Card now is to trade on a secondary market like [OpenSea](https://opensea.io/collection/curiocardswrapper), where collectors buy and sell existing cards. All of the Card vending machines from 2017 are sold out, where one hundred percent of the sales revenue went to the original [artist](/the-artists)[s](/the-artists). \ \ The [community voted](https://governance.curio.cards/#/proposal/QmU61U2bux8io9VrVKGd9pmSfn7v5WDQ1o9EooSGe3qYhu) for a 1% royalty fee on all OpenSea trades to be equally allocated to the artists. No OpenSea cut is taken by the team or community. Curio Cards has always been about supporting artists and promoting digital artwork as a medium. ### What is wrapping? *Note: If you bought cards from the* [*OpenSea collection*](https://opensea.io/collection/curiocardswrapper) *you don't need to worry about wrapping.* Wrapping is only relevant if you bought Cards from the original 2017 vending machines, which are now sold out. Curio Cards pre-date modern NFT standards and are unique in how they were created. While Curio Cards acted as inspiration for later standards (referenced in EIP-721 and EIP-1155), they are not compatible with those later standards. To resolve this, a contract called a wrapper was created by members of the original team and the cardholder community. Wrapping takes a Card and "wraps it" inside a modern NFT token (specifically an ERC-1155 token). Imagine putting an old baseball or Pokémon card into a protective sleeve to allow easy trading; this is what wrapping does. Modern platforms like [OpenSea](https://opensea.io/collection/curiocardswrapper) need the Cards to be in these new sleeves to allow trading. It is a compatibility tool, with nothing about the Card you own changed. You can unwrap a Card at any time, so there is no difference in value between a wrapped or unwrapped Card. And, unlike physical paper cards, Curio Cards are always mint condition. Cards purchased through OpenSea will already be wrapped, so you don't need to do anything. Collectors tend to leave their Cards wrapped. You can use any wallet that supports ERC-1155 to transfer Curio Cards. The easiest method is to view the card on [OpenSea](https://opensea.io/collection/curiocardswrapper), and click the “Transfer” icon (looks like a gift) in the upper left. ### How do I view my Cards/other people's Card Collections? Lack of testing frameworks and low gas costs made "testing on mainnet" common practice at the time of the project's development. When Cards 17, 18, and 19 were deployed and tested, an issue with the vending machines was found that made Cards 18 and 19 unpurchaseable. The issue was fixed, all of the week's contracts were redeployed, and Cards 17–19 were officially released. However, the first 17 Card still worked. Its vending machine wasn't affected and still allowed purchasing. At the time, it wasn't listed for purchase, and was simply forgotten about; a leftover artifact of a standard test deployment. Fast forward to March 2021: A wave of new NFT interest spurred NFT archeologists into exploring the Ethereum blockchain for lost treasure. During their search, they found an unknown, unlisted Curio Cards vending machine, full of a different 2017 Card 17 series. The community now calls this card "17b" or the "misprint card." While it wasn't an "official" card, 17b is still a real and perfectly functional Card, created entirely in 2017, with a treasured history and a strong following. People consider 17b a necessary part of any full-set holders collection. ### Where can I trade Card 17b? You can now trade Card 17b [here](https://opensea.io/assets/ethereum/0x04afa589e2b933f9463c5639f412b183ec062505/172). ### Can I sell t-shirts/mugs/etc. with art from Curio Cards on it? That depends. The artists retain licensing rights to their work that you will need to consider, with each artist potentially having a different policy regarding selling derivatives of their work. To join the Curio Club, verify you're a cardholder or have at least 1 NFTx Curio Token (each token is backed by one floor-priced Curio Card). All Curio Cards were minted in 2017. The 2017 [Curio Card contracts](/info/card-contracts) are locked and immutable — no changes can be made. \ \ Anyone can use the original 2017 token factory to make a new NFT with the (now wildly outdated) Curio NFT standard. However, any tokens made this way are not associated with the original collection. These are separate projects/NFTs that share the same token standard, similar to the way many NFT projects use the same ERC-721 or ERC-1155 token standard, and may even use the same codebase or constructor contracts. **As graphic as crypto gets.** Phneep is the artiste of ‘02 photoshop. His level of manipulation is timeless — a treat, and a joke — it’s that good. Mostly, he makes Bitcoin propaganda; WWI and WWII posters turned to bold Bitcoin originals. Humorous subversions teaching us “why” Bitcoin — and how. Taking aim at “banksters” who ruin the world through a dirty fiat system. Pranksters like phneep need a butt to their jokes. Satire is second-nature. It’s how you draw eyes. By now, so is shitposting. By now, so is being Canadian. We know that much aboot him. Even if his art's made it all the way to the beaches and street-poles of Brighton, in the UK. (Phneep does enjoys a good beach, and a good book, too.) He’s mastered mashups, crossing the Canadian Maple leaf with every other flag. Hockey teams, too. Logos. GIFs. Bitcoin in horror movie posters. And then there was Mad Bitcoins. And then: Mad Bitcoins in movie posters. **Grounding Bitcoin In Art.** Cryptograffiti's not just a Bitcoin artist — he’s an activist. Way back, in 2015, he’d already said no to being the Silicon Valley Sales Guy, when he'd first stuck a Bitcoin QR code on a neighborhood bank. Purpose had emerged: down the Hashcash rabbit hole and out seeking revolution, he chose to teach others about Bitcoin. A better world through Bitcoin — the cause of his art. Whether rebranding the dollar bill with Bitcoin jargon and history, piecing together credit cards bits into headline-stealing portraits, or auctioning off the least expensive, fittingly tiny artwork in the world, all Cryptograffiti’s art comes from repurposed banking materials. It’s about destroying the oppressive old, and welcoming the free-er new; tearing down the legacy banking system and bringing Bitcoin’s permission-less chain to all. Like Bitcoin, Cryptograffiti’s projects cross borders — helping migrants in Cúcuta, a Columbian town next to dictator-ruined Venezuela. When not promoting Lightning Network’s split payments — like his DJ set in front of the U.S. mint — then Cryptograffiti's keeping the soul of Bitcoin culture alive. One meme or mandala at a time. **It’s all in the Cards.** Each Cryptograffiti Card was once on the streets of San Francisco. They're rebranded bank logos, which appeared on ATMs. Goodbye Union Bank of Switzerland, Mastercard and Citibank — hello BTC Keys, MineBitcoin and BTC. **Cartooning Bitcoin and beyond.** Cryptopop is a cartoonist who loves drawing dogs and androids. His first art attempts were pen doodles on the memo-pads of Filipino banks — back when he was still growing Bitcoin startups out of his hometown, Manila. Follow him and you’ll find his name is Luis Buenaventura. Luis earned a bachelor’s degree in art from the University of the Philippines. But it was coding, first, that opened doors to technology. Bitcoin exchanges, remittance ventures and coining “rebittance” — the chaotic early years; a never-ending series of shell games with banks. But Luis persevered. Capital was sought. He took trips from the island nation out to California’s Bitcoin capital: San Francisco. The city’s a cash-burner, so he shared dormitories in “barrackses” with thirty strangers. Survived nights nearly eaten alive by bedding with roaches. And, more importantly, attended meetups. The price of entry was free pizza and beer.\ \ In the chaos, there was hope; a life-changing encounter. The scenery set by El Rio, a legendary bar in the Mission district of SF. The event was sponsored by Coinbase (when Coinbase did meetups). Cryptopop, now that guy from Twitter who’d drawn the Gingerbread man around town, was approached by three strangers — the Curio Cards founders. Next, came art; the first cartoons on Ethereum: forgotten in 2017, resurrected in 2021, and then selling more than the entire Filipino art market. Forever thankful for his unexpected fortune, Cryptopop launched the Cryptopop Art Guild. **The collector’s artist.** Art is more than creation — it’s curation. Robek World learned this early: collecting Japanese anime off dial-up-powered internet. Then, sliding full color pages into translucent binder sheets. Page by page. A binder filled with art. And then traveled among school friends, carried by awe-inducing tales. The binder was the beginning. 1998. A year that formed Robek for more — webcomics. They were a pretty big deal. So much so that one day, Robek drew his own by hand. Once again, the art circulated school; the first issues. Later came larger comics. And comic conventions in college with his own artist alleys where fans could meet him and view his work. Robek’s modes of expression grew, too. He wanted to write. And he liked talking shit. Pretty soon, he found Moon, who made shitposter.club — a GNU social clone of Twitter (because Twitter took itself too seriously). Robek trolled and made art, and predicted Zuckerberg’s dream of a metaverse. But he was also sick of the media. So, he embraced anarchism and together with Moon, dove into digital collectibles. The project to follow? Curio Cards, in 2017. After Moon, Robek was their second fan. He nagged and nagged the founders to let him do cards. They did. Since then, he’s crafted an NFT collection of note, shared his thoughts as a collector, and made numbers of friends. # Daniel Friedman Artist of Cards 24, 25, and 26 ![](/files/5RRPYgRuVx4wuWA20Odn) **Evolving patterns from a pen-based scientist.** Daniel is a fascinating scholar and Curio Card creator whose combined expertise in art and science offers a unique perspective to the NFT domain. He is an accomplished scientist and researcher who holds an undergraduate degree in genetics from University of California, Davis, and a graduate degree in Ant Genetics, (a Ph.D. from Stanford University, studying the neurophysiology of collective behavior in ants). Daniel's artistic evolution began when he started creating pen-based art as a teenager. These detailed, small-scale drawings utilized simple elements woven into a complex whole. The patterns and breaks in the repetition of his Curio Cards are mesmerizing and cerebral. Daniel became interested in cryptocurrencies and distributed cryptosystems in 2015. After researching the potential non-financial applications for these crypto tools, he was intrigued. As a researcher, he recognized their usefulness for solving challenges in the academic and artistic communities. Passing strangers would stop by and color, assemble or be in charge of the composition, which made the final piece. What came from it, was a finished story, touched by many hands from people who had no relation to each other. Marisol Vengas was also the pseudonym for real-life Max Infeld, the Chico-based artist whose featured work in Curio Cards was one that explored social engagement in art. Innovating across many mediums and fields of application, Max defies the label of “traditional artist” by subverting fine art practices. From early community monetary experiments predating Bitcoin, to his art featured in Curio Cards, to [his current work with DAOs](http://alienworlds.io), the participant or community engagement is a common thread. All of which was a shift in focus from his California State University Fine Arts degree. Backstory When Max decided to go to college, he initially chose to study computer science. However, with the end in sight, he pivoted, and underwent formal art training, obtaining a Bachelor's Degree of Fine Arts from California State University. Following an interest in cryptocurrencies, Max became an early adopter of Bitcoin. After he learned about Namecoin, the first cryptocurrency that supported NFTs, he recognized the potential impact blockchain could have for art and finance, even though it would take years to realize. It was his friend, Mad Bitcoins in the Bitcoin community (featured in Card 20), that informed him about Curio Cards and encouraged him to submit his art. Max’s interest in experimenting with social engagement in the artistic process led to the creation of the art submitted to Curio Cards. His submissions are considered among the first known represented “generative” artworks on Ethereum. This was an accidental duplicate deployment of Card 17. It was ignored until the 2021 Rediscovery of Curio Cards and is now considered a canonical part of the Curio Cards collection. Supply: 497 ### Wrappers Card 17b was not included in the official Curio Cards ERC1155 wrapper when it was released, as there was a lot of debate around whether it really counted as a 'real' Curio Card. For a while, it was only tradable on a [community-created alternate wrapper](https://opensea.io/assets/ethereum/0x3c2754c0cdc5499df1a50d608d8985070bf87b30/172), but the Curio Cards team recently put out a new [17b-only wrapper](https://opensea.io/assets/ethereum/0x04afa589e2b933f9463c5639f412b183ec062505/172) with a smaller royalty paid out directly to the artists. For the wrappers, two different artworks were created. The first was quickly put together by an anonymous community member; the second was created by Luis Buenaventura, aka Cryptopop, the original Card 17 artist. # Protecting Your Cards Mistakes in crypto are permanent. No one is immune to scams. But a few simple steps, and good common sense, can vastly reduce your risk. ### Want the short version? Top 3 things to know: 1. **There is NO reason anyone would ever need your** [**seed phrase**](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/seed_phrase) **or** [**private key**](https://wiki.trezor.io/Private_key) * Curio Cards, OpenSea, MetaMask, Ledger, Trezor, etc will **Never** ask you for this. No matter how official the request looks, remember impersonation is easy online. * The Only time a seed phrase is needed is when you decide to recover a wallet. For a hardware wallet, you never need to enter your seed phrase on your computer, *only on the hardware device itself!* * Unsure about a request? Join a reputable crypto discord community like [The Daily Gwei](https://t.co/WUCtcwEFio) or [Bankless](https://discord.gg/bankless) and ask for advice. Ignore private messages; to avoid scams, leave out personal info and keep the conversation public. Give time for lots of people to see and reply. If a request is too urgent for this, it's a scam. 2. **Getting a Hardware Wallet** * They start at $80 and are the **#1 best thing you can do** to keep your crypto safe. This wallet carries more risk of theft. * Cold Wallet - where you keep everything else. This wallet is cold because you hardly use it, and is ideally left offline. Only use it to send things too and from the Hot Wallet, never connect it to a service or authorize access for a site/tool. You lose all of your crypto and NFTs. **What is happening:** There is NO legitimate reason why any service or project would need your seed phrase. It will never happen. This is an extremely convincing fake application, prompt, website, email, etc. There are other ways to verify security, identity, etc, your seed phrase is never used for this. **How to Mitigate:** * The only time you ever need to use your seed phrase is when you decide you want to recover access to an old wallet. It is a decision you make, it is never an external request. * If you use a hardware wallet, you'll never enter the seed phrase into your computer only on the hardware device itself. If the hardware wallet software on your computer asks for it, that is a scam. Something is impersonating it. * If you use a mobile wallet, you'll only enter the seed phrase into the wallet app after you choose to begin the recovery process. If the wallet app prompts you for the seed phrase, that is a scam. Something is impersonating it. ## Token Approval Hacks **Description:** A project is impersonated, or its website is hacked, and you sign a transaction approving the spending of your tokens. Or you made an approval previously, and the site/tool is later hacked. That approval is used maliciously and your tokens are withdrawn from your wallet. **What is happening:** When you want to perform a swap or any other action that means a smart contract needs to interact with an ethereum token you own, you have to first approve that smart contract access to your tokens. Once it has this approval, it could then move your tokens on its own if it wanted to. Approving a small amount of access costs the same in gas as approving a lot, so often suggesting you perform an "unlimited approval" for access to that token, instead of only approving the exact amount needed at that moment. *Example: You want to swap 100 Dai for Eth on Uniswap. You first need to approve Uniswap's ability to access your Dai. You could approve only 100 Dai worth of access, but what if you want to swap more Dai in the future? Doing a single "approve all Dai" transaction now means you don't need to approve more Dai before any future swaps. This saves the user gas and speeds up future trades. But what if a bug is later found in the Uniswap smart contract, allowing a hacker to access this unlimited approval?* **How to Mitigate:** * You can edit the transaction to only approve the amount of the token you wish to swap, or a smaller amount that reflects how much you would like to trade in the near future. [Here is an example of how to do this](https://mrrealfi.com/limit-token-allowances/). * Try the [Revoke.Cash browser extension](https://revoke.cash/extension) which tells you when you are about to sign a approval and didn't realize it. * Try the [Fire browser extension](https://twitter.com/_joinfire/status/1568248981528125443) which tries to explain in simple terms what a transaction does. * You can, every now and then, check and revoke any old approvals you have made in the past. You can do so here: . ## Message Signing Scams **Description:** A malicious or hacked service asks you to sign a message with your wallet, seemingly for something innocuous. Then your NFTs are stolen from that same wallet. **What is happening:** You can use your ethereum wallet to perform gas-less actions, where it is not required that a transaction be submitted on-chain and gas be paid. For example voting in a DAO with [Snapshot](https://snapshot.org/#/), getting exclusive access to a discord channel by verifying you control a wallet that owns a certain NFT, or listing an NFT for sale on OpenSea. These use cases are common and generally positive. But if someone tricks you into signing a message you don't understand, it could instead be to do something like listing your NFTs for private sale to the hacker at near-zero prices. **How to Mitigate:** * Only sign messages you understand for services you trust * Try the [Revoke.Cash browser extension](https://revoke.cash/extension) which tells you when you are about to sign a approval and didn't realize it. * Try the [Fire browser extension](https://twitter.com/_joinfire/status/1568248981528125443) which tries to explain in simple terms what a transaction does. * Don't sign messages promising free money without first checking the project is legit, or that it's not impersonating a legit project. Just go ask and wait, if it's time sensitive its a scam. * Use the Hot/Cold wallet method described at the top of this page and don't sign with your Cold wallet. A signed message only covers the wallet that signed it. ## Airdrop Scams **Description:** You see a project you like airdropped you a new NFT or Token! You go sell it, or you follow a website link in its description or transaction details. Your wallet is suddenly compromised and you lose your crypto and NFTs **What is happening:** It wasn't a real airdrop, it was a scam that pretended to be the project you like. The way in which this can go wrong varies based on the attacker and the complexity of the scam. It might be a poison asset, something that looks like a normal Token or NFT, but when you interact with it (selling) it behaves in unexpected and malicious ways that are hard to predict. Or it might link you to a site that infects your computer or engages in one of the other scams listed above. **How to Mitigate:** * Don't do anything till you verify the airdrop is real. Never follow the link given to you by the airdrop, it can lead to a very convincing fake. Instead, go to that project's site or discord on your own to confirm the drop is real. * Wait and see. Generally, things with extreme time pressure are scams. Legitimate projects take the time to avoid [FUD](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fear,_uncertainty,_and_doubt) * Anyone can airdrop to any address, so consider airdrops the same thing as a **spam email**. You wouldn't click a link in a spam email right? You would first check via a different communication medium if it is legitimate and go directly to the source. ## Virus/Trojan/Malware **Description:** You go to a website or click a link. The crypto and NFTs in your wallet start to vanish. **What is happening:** You got a virus, or a hacker was able to access your computer, and you were not using a hardware wallet. Not using a hardware wallet means the keys used to access your crypto assets are stored on your computer, for anyone to steal.[ Here is a similar story, and what they did next to stop it](https://medium.com/@owl_of_moistness/how-i-got-compromised-post-mortem-of-a-dark-stormy-night-67b84f93f41c). **How to Mitigate:** * [Get a hardware wallet](/protecting-your-cards/hardware-wallets). With a hardware wallet, your keys don't live on your computer. * A hardware wallet vastly reduces this risk but doesn't remove it. With a hardware wallet, you need to approve a transaction, so nothing will happen without you approving it, but a virus could still infect your MetaMask and alter the transaction you are approving. Verify the transaction on the hardware wallet's screen before approving it. ## Sharing your screen **Description:** You are receiving technical support and they ask you to share your screen to help diagnose an issue. You do so, and after a moment Crypto and NFTs start to leave your wallet. **What is happening:** The technical support, while appearing legitimate, was actually scammers. While sharing your screen they had to click through to something that seemed harmless but revealed to them some useful information. This could be your seed phrase, a "pairing" code for letting your mobile device access your computer's wallet, or some other trick. **How to Mitigate:** * When troubleshooting a crypto problem, never share your screen. * If it seems required to solve the problem, take a moment. End the support session, think it over and get some advice, and try again later. You can get advice in a reputable crypto community. * Don't use the contact details they gave you when trying again later. Go to the service's website, and submit a new request. This might add delay, but patience is the best defense. * If it seems like they still need you to share your screen, offer to send screenshots instead. Search them first for any sign of compromising information. # Hardware Wallets Given the cost of even a single Curio Card, there is no reason not to purchase a hardware wallet. Using a hardware wallet is the #1 best thing you can do to increase your security, as they can protect your crypto even if your PC is compromised. Your private keys and seed phrase never leave the hardware wallet. You should never trust your computer alone, even with up-to-date antivirus and firewall software. The first step is to acquire a hardware wallet. The most popular and widely used hardware wallets are made by [Ledger](https://www.ledger.com/) and [Trezor](https://trezor.io/). Purchase it brand new directly from the manufacturer's website to reduce the risk of tampering. #### Seed Phrases When you set up your hardware wallet, you will be creating a new seed phrase. **There is No reason someone will ever need your** [**seed phrase**](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/seed_phrase) **or** [**private key**](https://wiki.trezor.io/Private_key)**. Don't share it with anyone! Not MetaMask/Ledger/Trezor tech support, not a project developer, not a Curio Cards official admin, NO ONE for ANY reason.** No matter how official the request looks, remember impersonation is easy online. The Only time a seed phrase is needed is when you decide to recover a wallet, and you never need to enter your seed phrase on your computer, only on the hardware wallet itself! The hardware wallet software running on your computer will never ask for the seed phrase to be typed on the computer. You also need to keep a secure copy of your seed phrase offsite, so if your house or apartment burns down, you can still recover. You may also want to give a copy to a loved one, for backup and estate planning reasons. Remember once you give the seed to someone they have the ability to access all of your funds and must keep it safe as well. #### Setting Up Your Hardware Wallet In order to set up your hardware wallet accounts to facilitate the lowest risk, we are going to utilize multiple account addresses. The purpose is to isolate and limit the risk per account, aka compartmentalize. > Concept: **Compartmentalize** \ > This long word just means "don't put all your eggs in one basket". Instead keep different assets in different places with different levels of risk. Here is a basic example as an introduction: We will set up your MetaMask with three accounts from your hardware wallet. * The first account can be used for normal day-to-day transactions and smaller amounts. If the first account gets compromised, the amount of assets lost will be minimal. Also, if the first account is compromised, you can stop using it and just add another account as a replacement. This is also referred to as a Hot Wallet. * A second account will only be used to buy and sell assets from a legitimate source like OpenSea. An example would be selling a Curio Card or Art Blocks piece that you transferred from your vault account. After the buy or sell is completed, the assets should be transferred to your vault account for safekeeping. * The third account on your hardware wallet we will designate as your Vault (or Cold Wallet). You will not be making transactions from the vault account, it is strictly for holding your long-term and high-value assets. Keeping this account separate helps to minimize the risk of making a mistake, accident, or getting compromised. The only way you will ever use this wallet is by transferring funds and NFTs too and from your other wallets. Now it should show you the account page for the vault, and the same address, go ahead and verify the first and last 4 digits are what you expect. If it looks good, copy it to a notepad. ### Transferring your NFTs Now we are ready to transfer your existing NFTs from your non-ledger account to your ledger account. Enter OpenSea with your non-ledger account, choose a low value NFT to begin with. Select “More options” on that NFT, and select “Transfer” ![](/files/FYEcKpTUSfQFVuToxYoH) You will be taken to the page where you will input the wallet address you want to send it to. It is possible to rush this step and mistakenly send it to somebody else. All crypto transfers are final. Once you have transferred it, you will be able to see that the NFT is now in your Ledger account, and will show on OpenSea when you are logged in with that account. Congratulations, you successfully transferred your first item! For your Vault account, only use it to receive and store NFTs or tokens, or send them to your buying/selling account. You can hide airdropped NFTs as needed. To be secure, don't use the vault account with random projects/dapps. Stick to using your day-to-day transaction account for that. Finish transferring your remaining NFTs and tokens into your vault account. Now you have a secure wallet set up with a strategy to minimize the risks to your valuable assets. The extra transactions to transfer to and from your vault account are well worth the extra security it affords your assets stored in your vault. ### Hiding Spam NFTs If you receive a spam airdrop NFT, don't engage with it or follow any links it gives you. The easiest thing to do is simply hide it. In OpenSea, click the three dots on the top left of the NFT, and select hide. With your ledger unlocked, OpenSea will prompt you to sign a transaction. Once you sign the transaction, your NFT will be hidden. # Guide for Trezor This guide will show you how to setup MetaMask with your Trezor T and transfer any existing assets into your Trezor. Join the Curio Cards DAO. # Graph API If you would like to create your own project around Curio Cards, a subgraph was created by Mack#9736 {% embed url="" %} {% embed url="" %} # Wrapping Old Curio Cards Curio Cards are early crypto art which pre-date NFTs and are therefore incompatible with modern platforms like OpenSea. \ \ To make trading Curio Cards possible, a “wrapper” contract was created in 2021 through a joint effort by the community and members of the original Curio team. **Heads up:** if you bought your cards on [OpenSea](https://opensea.io/collection/curiocardswrapper/), they are already wrapped and you don't need to do anything else. Any cards shown as "minted" on OpenSea are just old cards being wrapped to make them compatible for trading. No new Curio Cards can ever be minted outside of the existing original supply from 2017. #### What is a Wrapper Contract? A wrapper contract is a compatibility tool, nothing more. You can think of it like a collector's sleeve, which old Curio Cards are placed inside of, so they can be accessed on NFT platforms like OpenSea (using the new ERC-1155 token format). (For the technical history lovers: the ERC-1155 Standard improves on the Ethereum ERC-721 Standard that defined modern NFTs in 2018 and referenced the 2017 Curio Cards project. Although Curio Cards are ERC-20 tokens, they are actually semi-fungible in nature, but wrapping them makes them compatible with the ERC-1155 Standard.) Modern NFT collectors don't need to worry about wrapping or unwrapping their Curio Cards; the wrapper tool exists to help people with native 2017 Curio Cards. When an old Curio Card is wrapped, it will show up on OpenSea as "minted," but this just means an old card is being made available to trade on OpenSea for the first time. #### How do I Wrap/Unwrap my cards? The wrapper tool for the official wrapper contract is accessible at [wrap.curio.cards](https://wrap.curio.cards/) (and [wrap.curio.cards/17b](https://wrap.curio.cards/17b) for the [forgotten card 17b](/the-cards/17b-uasf-misprint).) We recommend watching this short (1:32) video guide before using the wrapper: {% embed url="" %} #### I see other wrappers for Curio? Anyone can create a wrapper contract — it is just a smart contract that accepts cards. It does not require permission or approval from the original Curio Cards team to deploy. **That also means there is no guarantee of audits, security, or support for a 3rd-party wrapper**. Since they were not reviewed by the core team, this documentation does not officially endorse any 3rd-party wrapper contracts. Some of them are fine to use, but be careful and check with others in the [Curio Discord](https://discord.curio.cards/) before using a 3rd-party wrapper. Using an unsupported wrapper should be considered a "Curio Experts Only" activity. For an example of a 3rd-party wrapper gone bad, in 2021, someone made a buggy wrapper that prevents cards from unwrapping, locking those cards forever. There is no way to disable this locking wrapper. The [official wrapper](https://wrap.curio.cards/) (as seen in the video above) was reviewed by an external solidity auditor and has been extensively tested and used, and is the recommended option for all Curio Cards collectors. # Accessing Old Cards If you bought Curio Cards back in 2017, you did not use MetaMask to do so. MetaMask was still a very new beta wallet in 2017, and it was not supported by the Curio Cards website. Your cards are now stored in either a private key, seed phrase, or keystore file backup. This is only for looking at the native 2017 contract card balances.** ### Displaying Cards in MetaMask * First, get the contract address for a card from the [Card Contracts](https://docs.curio.cards/card-contracts) documentation. * Then in MetaMake add the card address as a new, custom token. **Never send cards to the card contract address! You will lose them! Once you copy a card address into your clipboard, make sure you don't accidentally paste it into a transfer transaction later!** ![](/files/-MWlJ9HcX7bBUEHbPNVw) ![](/files/-MWlJLibEz4bv_KNoNwx) * Click 'Next' then 'Add Token' * You will now see the balance for that 2017 native card in your MetaMask asset list # Importing a Private Key If you participated in Curio Cards back in 2017 your card wallet might be saved simply as a private key. You can use this to access your Cards, but it is not recommended that you keep this private key accessible. ### **Important Security Warning:** In the following steps, you could find yourself accessing passwords, seed phrases, and private keys. **BE CAREFUL!** Anyone with access to this private key or seed phrase can steal all your funds and cards. Curio Cards, MetaMask, MEW, etc, will **NEVER** email or message you requesting your private key or seed phrase **FOR ANY REASON**. There is no valid support reason for anyone to need to request this information. You are the only person who needs to control, backup, or access your wallet. ## Importing a Private Key into MetaMask Note on Backups: Importing an account this way will NOT include it in your MetaMask Seed Phrase backup. You will need to backup the Private Key yourself. Note on security: **BE CAREFUL!** Anyone with access to this private key or seed phrase can steal all your funds and cards. Curio Cards, MetaMask, and MEW will **NEVER** email or message you requesting your private key or seed phrase **FOR ANY REASON**. {% embed url="" %} It is a good idea to transfer your cards out of this imported address and into a MetaMask address that is covered under your Seed Phrase, or backed-up on a Hardware Wallet. You will pay gas to perform this operation, but you will no longer need to keep a private key on hand (less secure) # Restore a Keystore File If you participated in Curio Cards back in 2017 your card wallet might be saved in a Keystore file. You can still access your Cards, but this is now an outdated method for storing Ethereum wallets. It is recommended that you migrate to a newer method. Newer methods (like MetaMask) will also allow you to Wrap/Unwrap, Trade, and [Vote](/dao-and-contribution/proposals) with your cards a lot easier. ### **Important Security Warning:** In the following steps, you could find yourself accessing passwords, seed phrases, and private keys. **BE CAREFUL!** Anyone with access to this private key or seed phrase can steal all your funds and cards. You are the only person who needs to control, backup, or access your wallet. ## Accessing you Keystore file ![Example of what a Keystore looks like](/files/-MWl7IjWj--49Gxyqef-) Note that if you have a file like the one above it will also require a password to access. ### Method 1: Load wallet and Transfer Cards to a new MetaMask address * Pros: Safer (your Cards are backed up with your MetaMask Seed Phrase and your private key is never revealed) * Cons: Gas costs to transfer your Cards to the new address Curio Cards ran a version of the original MyEtherWallet (MEW), called MyCurioWallet , that had support for the card addresses built-in. MyCurioWallet is still accessible if needed (covered in [Method 2](/info/overview/keystore-files#method-2-export-private-key-and-load-into-metamask)) but it is outdated and less secure. The new version of [MEW](https://www.myetherwallet.com/) still supports loading Keystore files and can display the Card balances. You can use it to transfer your Cards to a new wallet, but it does not support revealing the private keys for security reasons. * Go to [https://MyEtherWallet.com/](https://myetherwallet.com/) * Scroll down and select 'Access My Wallet' ![](/files/-MWlDlrzm1d0NmKXqz9d) * Select 'Software' ![](/files/-MWlDppOl1ehpqReho4l) * Select your Keystore file and enter your password ![](/files/-MWlDsJBOOz5qSvNbCJN) * You can now see your Cards in the Token List on the right side of the Dashboard ![](/files/-MWlHUHO6ga6OHd6XLEc) * Select Send in the sidebar, choose your Cards, and send them to your MetaMask wallet. This step is needed so you can see your card balances in the MetaMask wallet ### Method 2: Export private key and load into MetaMask * Pros: No gas costs * Cons: Less safe (need to reveal and then back up your private key) #### 1. Extracing the Private Key from the Keystore File There are a few ways you can extract your Private Key from the Keystore file. None of the modern online wallets support this feature [for various security reasons](https://medium.com/mycrypto/a-safer-mycrypto-79d65196e7d8), but you can still access them using a few methods: * MyCrypto (a popular fork of MyEtherWallet) Desktop wallet: * The Desktop version of MyCrypto can be downloaded here: * Documentation for how to access a Keystores private key is located here: * * This method is the most secure as the private keys are not revealed using an online webpage * The old MyCurioWallet * MyCurioWallet has so far been left only up for convenience and emergencies, but is no longer a fully functional wallet (the old nodes are no longer supported) and should not be considered a secure option (it is easier to perform phishing attacks with websites). Nevertheless, it does offer a quick way to view a keystore file's private key * [https://MyCurioWallet.com/](https://mycuriowallet.com/) * Go to "View Wallet Info" in the header * Choose Keystore from the methods, select your file and enter your password * You will now have the ability to see your public key as well as reveal your private key * Downloading ad running an offline version of the old MyEtherWallet * Documentation for this method with trusted download links is harder to come by now given the age of the old version of MEW #### 2. Verify you are a Curio cardholder (currently DAO membership is limited to cardholders). You can do so by typing `!join` in the `#bot-commands` channel to claim the `@hodler` role. 2. Once verified, find `#dao-start-here` under the Curio DAO channels. Read it to learn how to access the DAO discussion channel. 3. Introduce and familiarize yourself with the DAO discussion channel members. 4. Talk to any Guild mod about what you'd like to contribute toward, and ask for the appropriate Guild role (Outreach, Writers', or Mint). # Outreach Guild Collaborations and building relations The Outreach Guild is for all outreach discussions and activities. Contributors carry out partnerships and build ongoing relationships with budding Web3 projects that align with the Curio Cards [Mission and Ideals](/dao-and-contribution/mission-and-ideals). Just arrive with a genuine interest in the topic you'd like to write about, a curious mind, and a can-do attitude. Through the iterative review process, your Guild peers will help bring your writing and ideas from draft to final, published piece. The Writers' Guild is open to any creative writing project ideas. The DAO relies on helpful community members to run and maintain aspects of Curio Cards. All of this is possible through passionate community members just like you who want to contribute something meaningful and share their love for Curio Cards.\ \ To thank contributors, a fund was set up with donations to the cause. This fund enables contributors to reward each others' work with $CURIO tokens. $CURIO **tracks the Curio Cards floor price on NFTx.** You can find out more about [how the NFTx Vault works here](https://forum.curio.cards/t/curio-cards-nftx-vault/15). \ To effectively help contributors see where their allocations go and who is receiving them, the DAO currently uses an off-chain web application — [Coordinape](https://coordinape.com/). ### How to use Coordinape Here's a helpful video on how Coordinape works: {% embed url="" %} ## How to join the Coordinape circle *Note: It's important to remember that even though you can join the circle, you won't receive allocations if you haven't been actively adding value or making positive relationships with other community members! It's what you make of it!* To get added to the circle, you must have entered the Curio Cards Discord server, and joined the DAO channels. Once you're in, contact any Guild Moderator in #dao-discussions. Here's a list of current active Guild Moderators you can message: * Crypto Lurker (3371)#4072 * Konstantin #3252 * ActiveInferenceLab#3629 * Svën Höek#8961 * brianmct#3155 * zerog#9751 * travisformayor#7886 You will also need a public wallet address. This address will be viewable by any admin distributing the funds for that month. So, make sure you're providing an address you're comfortable with people seeing publicly. \ \ You'll also be granted a **@coordinaper** Discord role. **Please ask your mod for this role, too.** Once you've joined the circle, you'll need to **opt in** to the **epoch** to keep updated. Epochs are the monthly contribution cycles which run according to the calendar months. A moderator will remind all members with the @coordinaper role to fill out and allocate their tokens (Raccoon Points) at the beginning and end of each month. ### Allocations Every contributor starts with **100 Racoon Points** at the beginning of every epoch. **These do not accumulate. Raccoon Points refresh every month.** These also aren't real tokens — they are merely a way to track who has allocated what to whom, before moderators release the funds. At the end of an epoch, Raccoon Point allocations are counted up and converted into $CURIO, which gets dispersed from the [DAO multisig](/dao-and-contribution/curio-dao). To get allocated Raccoon Points, you need to tell your fellow community members what you've accomplished (well done!). Whether helping with documentation, translating a page, assisting with market research or managing a marketing campaign — letting other people know what you've been busy with helps them decide how much to allocate, and to whom. # Proposals The goal of Curio community collaboration is to expand the project ecosystem and continue to make collecting the cards fun and easy. No new cards from the original 2017 collection will ever be released. The proposals the Curio Community vote on will serve these goals. ## Proposal Process 1. An initial discussion around new ideas and proposals start in the Curio Discord () and Curio Forums () 2. A single (or series of) non-binding votes/polls will take place on the Curio Discord and Forum. 1. Each vote will run for least 24 hours to give people from all timezones an opportunity to participate. 2. The votes will help gauge support and figure out specific details. 3. The results of the discussions and polls will be written up for review and feedback by the appropriate Curio Guild team. The final draft becomes a formal governance proposal. 4. Formal Proposals go to a Cardholder Vote at[ https://governance.curio.cards/](https://governance.curio.cards/) 1. Votes will be announced on the official Curio Twitter account,[ @MyCurioCards](https://twitter.com/mycuriocards), and the Discord.​ 2. Votes will run for 24-72 hours to give people from all timezones an opportunity to participate, depending on the urgency. 3. Voting uses the popular Snapshot platform which costs no gas, using signatures instead of transactions. Cardholder Voting is based on the amount and rarity of held cards and/or fractional Card tokens (including LP). "I am here for the journey and to learn, curious about how DAOs will play a role" There are challenges of people jumping in & out. \ \ Balancing this with rewards and accessibility so that it is easy to onboard could be a solution to this. Healthy boundaries could be put in place where individuals can jump in and out. At this stage, Curio Cards DAO may not need a massive amount of people to perform its tasks anyway. Crypto Lurker asks a question: \ How are some DAOs run by smart contracts? A good place to start, because governance has on-chain and off-chain components to them. DAOs in a more narrow sense could refer to more web3 (cryptographic identities, on-chain activity, utilizes smart contracts). But on a broader sense, every organization either begins and/or in a sense, is a DAO. * There is a difference in balance of trust it comes to multi-signature wallets. Where in a scenario 5 of 7 signers in a group will have to worry less about the imbalance of trust given to a singular person 5 of 7 voting through emojis and trusting 1 person to carry out the same transaction. * Some on-chain smart contract use cases for DAOs other than to transfer funds with multi signature wallets can be: Snapshot which can store information and data about community votes about certain ideas. * L1 voting protocols can become expensive to operate on, in which we may see more conversational votes over smaller decisions, verses spending ETH on transferring a large sum of funds. **15:55** The Curio Cards DAO hasn't come across any on-chain voting besides the initial royalty free vote on Mar 29, 2021.
